So I took this short on as a favour, shot over two weekends in the director's cousin's flat, no script supervisor, half the crew were film students. Normally on a set like that I lose my first evening just scrubbing around trying to work out which take she actually liked. This time the one she'd been going on about came in with a GOLD flag on it and I clicked straight to it. Got the evening back, which on a job at this budget never happens.
ok so we record the podcast in one continuous two hour roll and finding anything after used to be my whole evening, just scrubbing. this time every moment they'd tapped during the session came in as a marker. sponsor read, the tangent, the bit where the guest cracked up. i jumped mark to mark and had the cut same night. ui is pretty bare, looks like something a student made, but it did the thing.
We wrapped a night exterior at 2am in drizzle and there was just... nothing left to do. No paper log to chase around, no one sitting in their car typing. I went home.
I'll be honest, producers hand me an app about once a year and it's dead by lunch on day two because someone has to keep feeding it. Told our AD I wasn't touching this one, we were doing 30-something setups a day on a kitchen shoot for a client who kept rewriting lines, I did not have hands free. Our second AC had the phone anyway so it wasn't my problem. What got me was at wrap I checked the export against my cards, C0247, C0248, right down the line, no drift, no off-by-one, and that's the exact thing these apps always screw up. I'd make the tag chips bigger though, he kept fat-fingering them and swearing. But the numbers matched mine, so fine.
We shoot weekends, self-funded, and the last one was a farmhouse with basically no network, where most apps just give up. Monday I sent the XML and the PDF log to a freelance editor I'd never met. She didn't message me once, not even a 'which folder'. Battery took a hit by evening, a power bank on the cart sorted it.
